However, unlike other Nancy Drew games, most of the clues aren’t obvious and can’t simply be found by waiting for the red magnifying glass to appear on the screen (you can zoom on almost everything in this game). The main difference is that the game feels very ‘free-style’ Nancy essentially spends the whole game gathering clues from different locations – and then confronting suspects about said-clues. In terms of gameplay, this game is stylistically very different from its successors. I was definitely freaked out by the culprit’s disturbing threats and their intentions to murder. However, it’s definitely not for the young or light-hearted the themes dealt with in this game are dark. The atmosphere is fantastic in this game – very fraught and creepy. I actually have to applaud Her Interactive for creating such a tense and unsettling atmosphere. The whole game feels like this, constantly alternating between the real and the theatrical.

Her Interactive’s decision to base the mystery on the set of a telenovela only heightened the creepiness: while the mystery felt like something out of a televised drama, it still felt plausible enough to be something that could happen in reality. This game isn’t frightening or scary per se – there’s no surprising, in-your-face moments or inherently creepy themes like a ghost haunting – but it’s disturbing and alarming: someone is actively going out of their way to hurt – to murder – someone else. (And I thought nothing would top The Final Scene and its deranged culprit reveal). I’m going to say it: what is up with all these early Nancy Drew games having such petrifying plots and such psychotic suspects?!? This game freaked me out. It’s up to Nancy to find the culprit before one of the threats turn fatal. Although the threats have escalated from petty notes to tainted chocolates and a sabotaged klieg light, Rick refuses to involve the police. Nevertheless, while this game definitely has a great atmosphere and some interesting suspects, I will give warning that it’s very different from other Nancy Drew games, both in its plot and gameplay.įor her second adventure, Nancy travels to New York City at the request of Mattie Jenson, a telenovela star, whose co-worker – Rick Arlen – has been receiving death threats. Since Her Interactive re-released this game (I highly recommend buying this game from their website as their updated version is playable on later computer systems), I’ve been looking forward to playing it.
